Spirituality in Books and Film

"Paul Sussman's Eleven-Step Guide to Self-Actualization" (let's call it PS11) is a movie about a book.

As PS says early in the film: "See, one entire section of every bookstore in this country has been consigned to ridicule by people like you and me. Spirituality is a growth industry, yet nobody's written a cool self-help book. I intend to change that, how? By looking into my own essentially hip soul, and speaking from that place."

He then takes a puff from his inhaler, arguably damaging the "essentially hip" argument.

I don't agree with everything PS says (he's a fictional character and a flawed protagonist, that's what makes the film a comedy) but I am fascinated by the Spirituality section, and the film aims to start a conversation. I've read amazing books by the Dalai Lama and M. Scott Peck's classic "The Road Less Traveled" blew my mind when I was 18. Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle are marketing behemoths and have changed many lives. But how many titles can the market sustain? Where are the younger voices? And how can the virgin reader separate the wheat from the chaff?

Help make the film possible by viewing the trailer above as part of the Netflix Find Your Voice Competition. Vote five stars and spread the word to your colleagues and friends. Thank you!
